3 Things I Learnt From The Director Of Facebook

Over the past week I was lucky enough to spend some time with the Director of Facebook Australia and New Zealand, Stephen Scheeler.



The core message was that mobile and social are the biggest platforms for connecting with your clients and customers, and it is only getting bigger.


Did you know that 1 in every 3 minutes spent on a phone is spent on Facebook and Instagram? 33% of time we spend on our phones is in 1 of those 2 apps, so take stock, how is your business performing on Facebook.

There were 3 core messages about why you should be using Facebook (or using it more!);


  • Australians are the first nation to reach 100% mobile activation, meaning that every single person that accesses Facebook on a daily basis has at least one touch point on a mobile. Coupled with that there are 11 million users logging on daily in Australia.


  • It is the greatest opportunity you have to learn about your customers. This does not just come from insights for advertising, but it allows you to have open lines of communication with your audience, and ask questions in real time and get feedback.
  • The time has come to stop talking at people, and start to talk with people. Way too many businesses have been putting content and advertising out on Facebook without any desire to open a conversation with their audience, and this will no longer be a viable way of using Facebook.


Facebook is built on an unique identity platform – which means everyone’s newsfeed is different. What content they see, what ads are served to them, all depends on their interaction on Facebook, so you need to ensure that you are utilising the Facebook platform to the fullest to get the most reach.


In conjunction with the above, video is the biggest initiative within Facebook, from 2008-2016 video viewers on mobile have grown from 1% to 53%. So, if your company is not utilising video you are missing out on a huge opportunity to engage with your audience.

Obviously Stephen is pretty heavily invested in making sure we all use Facebook, however at Your Social Voice we agree, Facebook is a platform that has so much potential, and if your company isn’t utilising it to the fullest yet it’s time to start.
