This is the common dream we are constantly bombarded with anytime we dive into most social media platforms. Becoming an entrepreneur and starting your own business may theoretically seem like the answer to all of your problems, but like many things in life that seem to provide instant results, entrepreneurship is an elusive concept that can only be truly achieved through hard work 99.9% of the time.
The first thing most people like to leave out from any “Entrepreneurship” conversation, is how hard it is to become an actual Entrepreneur. From endless 15-hour days at the office to having tough conversations with clients and staff, embarking on the entrepreneur path is not going to be sunshine and rainbows. Another thing that you must have clearly ingrained in your brain since day 1, is that you need to be willing to put in the work and the hours in order to achieve your entrepreneurial goals. One very useful tip to get you through those tough days is to set a visual reminder of why you want to become an entrepreneur. Really think about what made you want to escape the 9-5 rat trap, is it money, is it the freedom, is it your lifestyle? Once you know your reason, simply look for an image that truly captures your reason of becoming an entrepreneur and then set this image as your wallpaper on either your mobile phone or laptop. For example, if you want to become an entrepreneur to improve your current financial situation, you could put a pictures of your bills, your dream house or dream car so every time your motivation is dipping, looking at that image can set you back on the right track and give you a helpful motivation boost.
“Improvise, Adapt, Overcome.” Even though this phrase ended up becoming a Bear Grylls meme, it can be directly applied to the entrepreneurial journey. Throughout your journey as an aspiring entrepreneur, many aspects of your business will change because there’s levels to this entrepreneurial journey and you must be adaptable. If your new business enters the growth stage, suddenly you need to expand. This means hiring more people you are now responsible for, so as your business grows, your managerial and financial responsibility of the business also grows at the same, if not at a greater pace. Since businesses can grow at different rates depending on the circumstances, another very useful tip is to have a game plan laid out for different scenarios. We know it’s near impossible to predict the future of your business, but we strongly recommend that you plan out your action steps for different business outcomes. For example, make sure to know who you would appoint to run the business in case you are suddenly unable to. Similarly, have a structured plan prepared for when your business faces financial distress. Afterall, the best way to adapt to the unexpected is to be prepared for all possible scenarios.
So, the bottom line is that you’ve got to be in it to win it, you need to be willing to put in the hard work and effort on those long and tedious days.
